A Better Day

Posted by Susan on June 16, 2009

This morning I weighed myself , and I was the same thing I was on Monday……138.8lbs. I’ll take it ! I had a really good workout this morning , after a good night’s sleep last night so it definately helped set the tone for a better day !

I used to resent the fact that I had to run my butt off all day at work, but now I see it as a blessing. Weight loss and weight maintaining would be a lot more difficult if I sat at a desk all day. I now see work as exercise. It not only helps my periodical panic attacks about calorie counts and scale readings, I am sure it makes me a lot easier to work with ! So it is a win/win.

I joined a challenge on You are supposed to set a goal to be reached by August 1st., set a reward for yourself , and if the goal is not reached by Aug. 1st, commit to sending $50 to a charity of your choice.

I set a goal of maintining my goal weight within 2 lbs. over or under 140 lbs. I chose a new bike as my reward for meeting the challenge, and a donation to the American Cancer Society if I do not meet my goal.

I REALLY want a bike. I see all you guys enjoying yours and I am sooo jealous !!!! What a fun way to get some exercise ! My husband has one already and I’ve already picked mine out ! I am making myself wait until August 1st though ! It is good incentive to reach my goal , knowing there is a nice prize waiting for me at the end of it !

I haven’t got much to say tonight, so I will make this short and sweet ! Off to bed so I can have another good workout tomorrow !

Sunday’ s Hike : Pratt Center

Posted by Susan on May 18, 2009

We like to hike on Sunday mornings , but yesterday was rainy and cold in the morning . I was ready to scrap the hike altogether until next weekend and hit the treadmill . (I was NOT looking forward to that !) But the weather cleared and , although it was still cold out , we decided to go anyway , just not out of town like we had originally planned .

We decided to visit The Pratt Center in New Milford , Connecticut . It is a 193 acre nature preserve and enviormental center. The East Aspetuck River runs through the property. It has mountains and meadows, woods, wetlands , gardens and a farm. There is also a climb up MT. Tom where there is a breath taking view of Litchfield County .

The hike was amazing inspite of the overcast skies . We climbed to the top of MT. Tom first. It was beautiful up there. The sun even came peeked through the clouds a few times . The climb was challenging , but felt great ! (At least to me … Hubby not so much !) It was definately better than a treadmill session !

I have a fascination of these twisty tangles of tree branches . To me , it looks magical , like something out of a fairy tale or something . I take pictures of them whenever I come across them.

These woods were the home and hunting ground of many of the area’s Native Americans , and to us, this tree looks like the profile of a Native American Indian Chief . I am not sure if it really see it in the photo.

I never realized before I started hiking agian how attracted I am to all the natural textures in the woods . I loved this bark for some reason, and half of the photos I took yesterday were of the intricate textures in nature . I guess I am weird…….I just love the whole woods thing . When I was a kid I would spend all day in the woods with the neighborhood kids making forts , or playing hide and seek . Hiking reminds me of childhood.

We ended up hiking 4 miles yesterday and it was awsome in so many ways . For one thing , between all the climbing and all the different terrain , we got an incredible workout ! I am also glad we decided to wait until noon to do and and didn’t scrap the idea all together . I find it a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors, appreciate nature, and spend quality time with my husband . I find peace when I hike , and I know I say this after eevery hiking post , but I will say it again ! I am so glad I got back into this ! I missed it more than I realized . I love exploring new trails and seeing such beauty that I usually am too busy running around living life to notice !

When we got home we both showered before we got dinner started . We both brought back little souvenirs from The Pratt Center . Matt ended up with a little tic on his leg . When I got out of the shower I found a tic on my arm ! I kind of freaked out (Matt will say I TOTALLY freaked out but that is an exaggeration ! ) Oh well ! Something to be expected I guess !

It was an excellent Sunday for me ! I got in my outdoor workout , and had fun with my husband ! It helped me begin the week refreshed and ready to get back to the old grind !

Turbulence Training :

Posted by Susan on May 7, 2009

Since January 1st , 2009 I have been doing a program called Turbulence Training . This program has totally changed the way I look at working out and in turn completely changed my body , as well as my life ! In the past 3 , going on 4 months lost 25 lbs. I’ve gone from a fat % of 39.7 to a fat % of 33.1 , and a BMI of 26.0 to a BMI of 22.2 ! To me this is amazing !

I have been working on this weight loss thing seriously for 2 years now . I did Body for Life and it did nothing for me personally. If anything it just frustrated me ! I was also bored to tears with the wieght training . When the new year started I decided what I really needed to do was lose fat . So I started doing my research , reading people’s blogs to see what worked for them , reading reviews of different programs. I stumbled upon TT completely by accident . After reading about it I decided to give it a try . It was a little pricey , but it came with a whole lot of workouts for the price and I felt the creator of the program seemed down to earth and credible after doing some research on him as well .

Craig Ballantyne is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as the author of many articles for Men’s Health , Oxygen , and Muscle and Fitess Hers magazines . His program is a combination of Supersets performed in a circuit , and HIIT 3 days a week . the exercises themselves are simple , nothing I hadn’t done before , but performed the way he lays them out , you can feel your heart rate going up , and you can definately tell these “simple ” exercises are anything but easy . He wants you to do the circuits 3x a week followed by 20 min. of HIIT . Craig believes that steady state cardio is a waste of time , and it is a proven fact that HIIT has a longer afterburn effect , something SS cardio does not offer. On the other 3 days a he suggest doing at least 30 min. of acivity……hiking, biking, walking your dog , whatever . I personally do SS cardio on those days because I enjoy it , I do a spin class sometimes , sometimes I even throw in an extra HIIT session.

This program has totally solved my boredom issues . I would get sick and tired of the same old things and sometimes that would lead to no exercise at all for weeks at a time . This program changes every 4 week for the circuits. I also love HIIT because , for me HIIT goes a lot quicker than the hours and hours of SS cardio.

I would love to workout for hours given the time , but I have work, and family, and life to contend with . I needed something that would give me the maximum results , in the shortst amount of time . That is exactly what TT offers .

After working so hard for so long and getting no results , this program was the best thing that ever happened to me. I had been trying to fit into a size 12 jeans I had in my closet now for 2 years ! I started this program in Jan. , by March I was wearing the 12 and by April I was into a size 8 .

I am finally losing enough fat to actually see some Ab muscles peaking through , and some definition in my arms as well ! I have wanted this for so long and now I’ve finally found something that works for me ! It fits into my life , I am always challenged and never bored, and I am feeling stronger than ever before . I do not think after seeing what circuits and HIIT can do to my body , I could ever go back to the way I used to workout .

I know this sounds likd some sort of advertisement, but honestly this is how I feel about this program . It has definately given me the results I was looking for , and seeing the changes only motivates me more to stick to it and push harder .

New Goal

Posted by Susan on May 2, 2009

Today my ( skinny ) sister gave me these really cute jeans . They are too big for her ( of course ). They are a size 7 but a teeny-tiny size 7 . I tried them on and I was able to get them on and zipped and buttoned , but they were skin tight ! I decided to make them my new goal pants . I love them , they are so cute !

I was so inspired by these that I pushed myself into doing 60 min. of extra cardio today ! I usually take Saturday as an active rest day , but these jeans changed that plan ! I did 30 mins. of SS cardio on the spin bike , and 30 min. of elliptical on one of the fat burning programs .

I realize that the best way to combat supposed hunger between meals ( you know , you just ate but are still hungry type of hunger ) is to do some cardio . I was not hungry anymore once I started moving .

Once I fit into these jeans I will wear them to Casual Day at work . I have avioded casual day for years because some thoughtless co-worker commented on how big I was once when I wore jeans . I never wore anything but scrubs ever since . When I fit into these well , I will wear them though ! The co-worker no longer works for our company , but I will still feel like I have accomplished something if I am able to wear jeans and finally look good in them !
